We are hoping to get you to think outside the box a little...If it is not math, what is it....now that is complicated...with no correct answer or special formula to make it come out right. Jewelry Basics and Felting

Jewelry making 101 Sat. January 28^th 10-3pm $45 plus materials

Do you have jewelry projects that need to be finished, but you are unsure of how to proceed? This class focuses on finishing_ what findings to use, how to wire wrap beads, how to make a clasp. I will even teach you how to use a micro torch so can finish wire off with a nice round silver bead.

Other areas covered will be riveting and Keum boo for those interested.

Kuem Boo is an ancient Korean technique for bonding metals, in this case, 24k gold to Fine Silver. If you have taken Metal clay classes with me and have a fine silver piece you can add gold accents to it with this process. I have had requests to teach.

Riveting is a way of making a cold connection (without solder) between two metals.

Wellll.... We did do 2 art shows and we are about to do another on Dec. 10 at the Waldorf School in Santa Barbara.

Queen of Arts at the Elverhoj and Queen of Arts Revisited went really well. It was so good to see everyone again.

We raised a really nice sum for Domestic Violence and had fun too at Queen of Arts Revisited. Thank you everyone who contributed!!

Last night we had a great time at our Artists Salon gathering and Day of the Dead Art Show. The winners are Betty Seaman Colleen Darling and Vicki Andersen. We had 23 pieces of art. I am glad it was a popular vote show. It was really tough to make a choice. Thank you everyone who came and who helped and who participated....I will add more later .....I have to go move the art to Valley Books . Come by and see all the great work on display until Nov 17.

Day of the Dead (Spanish: Día de los Muertos)is a day of remberance. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. It is particularly celebrated in Mexico, where it attains the quality of a National Holiday. The celebration takes place on November 1st and 2nd, in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints' Day (November 1) and All Souls' Day (November 2). Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts.

next question: Why sugar skulls?

Sugar Skull Tradition - Sugar art was brought to the New World by Italian missionaries in the 17th century. The first Church mention of sugar art was from Palermo at Easter time when little sugar lambs and angels were made to adorn the side altars in the Catholic Church.

Mexico, abundant in sugar production and too poor to buy fancy imported European church decorations, learned quickly from the friars how to make sugar art for their religious festivals. Clay molded sugar figures of angels, sheep and sugar skulls go back to the Colonial Period 18th century. Sugar skulls represented a departed soul, had the name written on the forehead and was placed on the home ofrenda or gravestone to honor the return of a particular spirit. Sugar skull art reflects the folk art style of big happy smiles, colorful icing and sparkly tin and glittery adornments. Sugar skulls are labor intensive and made in very small batches in the homes of sugar skull makers. These wonderful artisans are disappearing as fabricated and imported candy skulls take their place.

Lots happening in Oct. at the Art Clinic. On Tues. Oct. 25 the Art Clinic is hosting the Artist's Salon along with the opening of our first Day of the Dead Art Show. The show will be moved to Valley Books the following day and will hang there until Nov. 15th.

The in gathering is Tues. Oct. 18 at the Art Clinic from 11 til 3. All mediums accepted and 2D or 3D. Entry fee $10. Art can be for sale or not. Sales will be through the artist. You may want to reward Valley Books for hosting the show...up to you.

The judging will be by popular vote during the Artist's Salon. One ballot per person. The cash prize amount will be determined after ingathering. Contact us for more info....our contact info and address is in the side bar.

At the Salon we will have a non religious altar, an ofrenda, set up. Guest can bring an offering if they would like. We will have it up until Nov.3. We will have a few fun art projects set up for guests to play with....like a matchbook shrine, paper flower making and more...

“Cold Blooded Journal”

“Sssssssssssssss” –translation from snake language: “Howdy”.

This class is all about reptiles and snaky things, and the reason is that I recently came across a product that creates a nice scaly surface. Ssssso it dawned on me that this would be an interesting technique to use one a semi-sculptural surface, and to make it even more interesting I thought that it would be interesting to make that surface an object that could be used everyday. That surface? A sketchbook, for the cold-blooded. Of course you can fill the sketchbook with whatever you like but the exterior is going to be built up and scaled up to the point in which if you’re not noticed walking down the street with this…well…there probably isn’t anyone on the street. Ssssssounds sssssssswell doesssssssn’t it? Yesssssssssssss!

“Pretty Vial Things”

When I was a kid I loved the idea of magic potions. Remember how Alice drank from the bottle to become very very tall, and of course Dr. Jekyll turned into his hairy eye-browed buddy Mr. Hyde the same way…different recipe apparently. There must be some very interesting mojo in those little containers …some good…some not so good. In this class we are not going to be making the elixirs (that might be illegal in some states) but rather we are going to be designing the little bottles that house these strange liquids. We will be using various assemblage techniques to create some pretty vial things; part of the fun is deciding what they are going to hold and coming up with the appropriate housing. Whether it for turning into hairy monsters (which comes in handy), a potion for invisibility (also very handy), or a place to store the water from the fountain of youth (send me two right away), the containers will be as rich and strange as the contents. Down the hatch!

The details:

Each class is $125. Space is limited so send an email to get on the list and then send a check payable to Carol Kemp 1216 Jason Drive, Lompoc,CA 93436, or if you prefer PayPal email your name and contact info to lifsart@verizon.net and you will be sent an invoice. Your payment holds your spot and when received, you will be emailed the supply list. For your convenience, you may pay a nonrefundable deposit of $50 to hold your seat with the remainder due by June 9, 2011. If we do not receive the remainder by this time you forfeit your seat. When spaces are full we will start a waiting list.

Each kit will contain a starter frame, burlap backing, wool for your project and the use of a hook for the day.

Bring sharp sewing scissors and a rug hook if you have one.

Patterns will be provided or you can draw your own.

Come join us for this day of fiber fun and leave with a new technique for creating rugs, dolls, wall hangings and pillows.

Shrinemaking Workshop with Sukey Hughes Five Wednesdays starting January 20th - February 17th 1:30 - 4:30 Fee $225

Well we have been busy....Carol has been teaching at the ART CLINIC and for Arts Outreach....and doing shows at Shell Beach and La Arcada. She did manage to fit in some trips to San Fran and San Diego areas. We had a fun time at the Art from Scrap Assemblage show in Santa Barbara. I have been teaching my fantastic students some acrylic classes and did a show at La Arcada and was on board at First Thursday at Santa Barbara Arts. But I have been sneaking off to the beach when I can. It really recharges my batteries. But now Carol and I are gearing up for more classes and fun going-ons for the fall. So stay tuned...

This is the final assignment for one of my continuing students, Jo. She has taken it to a new level of excitement on her own. I just love these pieces!

Above is the beautiful scarf Theresa Laursen was making today at the Art Clinic- Felting with Barbara Carr. Theresa (below) is a fabulous designer. We have seen her incredable metal clay pieces so this felt scarf is is not a surprise!!!

It is a great upper arm workout with stunning results!!

My lovely and talented daughter Ruth brought me along as her assistent- in the muscle department as she needs no help in design. Doesn't she have a great color sense?

Hand carved stamps, etching plates and stamping metal

May 30, 2009 9-4PM $85 Includes copper, silver and stamp material. In this workshop we will take an idea, create a stamp from it, use it as a resist to etch metal creating a textured plate and use that textured plate to stamp into silver. The stamp can be used for paper and collage work as well as a resist for etching; the etched metal can be used as an element in jewelry and/or can be used to create unique charms in Sterling Silver. Some cold connection techniques will be demonstrated. This is a fun and informative class for those interested in expanding their jewelry making abilities. October 2008- Keum- bo class

Joins us at the Art Clinic for this exciting class:

Keum-bo (Korean "attached gold") is an ancient Korean gilding technique used to apply thin sheets of 24 k gold to fine silver.

Join master silversmith Carl Stanley to learn this ancient technique. Students will make a pair of earrings using Fine Silver and 24K gold foil. This is a full day class which will also include a lesson on Carl’s unique technique of gold fusion. Carl will also show students some tricks in making cold connections (without solder), using modified pliers to create textures), and other ideas.
This class is for all levels.

ATC day

We plan to have one more ATC day in Aug...third Thurs. We need to take a break and concentrate on upcoming deadlines and shows. But come any Thursday and work on some project or just hang out. We always have supplies to whip up some ATCs . The next event is Carol's. She will be at Camino Real Shopping Center in Goleta for a group show Sat. July 26. It sets up by Borders and the theater. Come check it out. The next weekend , Sunday, Aug. 3, is Dinosaur Caves, again for both of us, in Shell Beach. Later that month Syd will be at the Grange in Los Olivos for an art show with the Artist's Guild of Santa Ynez Valley. That is Aug. 16 and is in conjunction with the annual Quick Draw event. This is always a super interesting event.

Here are a couple of ATCs from the last trade. I did not get everyones because I was busy with Mary checking out some old Singer sewing machines....But it was great to have Nora and Kristen join in. These "young whipper snappers" have such cool ideas. I appreciate them coming by and hope to follow their art direction in the future.

Wow I can’t believe we have not posted here for a month. That shows how busy we are...Carol has been teaching her Visual Journal class and Metal Clay and we both have been working on teaching proposals for 09...and.... we are in two shows this Month:

4th of July at the Mission Art Show Alternative Site- 2227Garden Street at the corner of Pueblo and Garden. 10am -5pm

6th of July at Dinosaur Caves in Shell Beach just off the 101. 10am- 4pm

We are both in the Art from Scrape Assemblage show right now that will have it's silent auction in July 19th, in Santa Barbara.

Some exciting news for us is we are both getting in some publications: we are both in 1000 Artist Journal Pages by Dawn Sokol, Syd is in True Vision by LK Ludwig and Carol will be featured in Mixed Media Self Portraits due out September 1st, 2008. It is thrilling to see that one of Carol’s articles made the preview!!! There are more books in the wings..but more on that later. Santa Barbara Arts, in collaboration with the Downtown Organization and neighboring art venues, is excited to present 1st Thursday, an evening of art and culture in Downtown Santa Barbara. Metal Clay is 99.9% Pure Fine Silver which has been finely ground and mixed with an organic binder which produces a clay-like material. When fired, the binder burns away and the silver solidifies. This clay can be sculpted, carved, stamped, cast, virtually manipulated anyway that you can work traditional clay. If you have a desire to create beautiful pieces in silver without the need for a silversmith’s tools or experience. Beads and findings will be available for you to complete a necklace, bracelet or earrings at an additional cost.

Open Studio available for individuals who have attended my introductory class for Metal Clay. The studio cost is $25 plus the cost of the silver clay.

April 26, 2008 10-4 PM Printmaking without a press. This workshop explores a variety of ways of making printing plates and prints using simple everyday items. Well we had our one year anniversary of the ART CLINIC tonight. It was a fun party. Carol and I want to thank everyone who came. We really do appreciate your support. It was fun to see everyone working on projects....or should I say, it was fun to see everyone at play. We were all making collage houses, ATCs, creating haikus, exquisite corpses, laughing and eating. Mary Price was our haiku winner. Did anyone know until tonight she is the "Queen of Haiku"? Not me, but it is true...I read it in a haiku.

Exquisite Corpse Day

Here are all but one of the results from the exquisite corpse challenge. We plan to do another of these fun challenges. This is how it worked : We started with 6 artists who drew out a secret slip of paper with either leg, leg, arm, arm, body or head on it. Then you make 6 of this body part. The only rule was it should be stuffed. Today we reached in to a bag with out looking and drew out one of each and sewed them together and added a face. It was really fun!

Upcoming art show

Carol and Syd are 2 of the 15 local artists from the Artists Guild of the Santa Ynez Valley that have been invited to show their work in the Spring Show at the Rehabiliation Institute Meisel Gallery in Santa Barbara. The Rehabilation Institute uses art as part of the healing process. The gallery was established by Founding Medical Director, Harris Meisel, MD., who feels art has a way of transforming a sterile medical environment into a setting of color and inspiration. Dr Harris, also an artist who displays his work at the Institute, has allowed artists from the Santa Barbara area to display and share their work within the gallery.
There will be a Show Reception, Feb 22, 2008 5-7 PM, and the public is invited to come and meet the artists. The Spring show will run Feb.18 - May 2, 2008. Viewing hours are M-F, 9AM - 9PM and Weekends 10AM - 5PM. Address is 2415 De La Vina St, Santa Barbara (805) 687-7444.

The New Year is upon us which marks the Art Clinic’s first year anniversary!!! We are so excited-
so save the date and help us celebrate on the one extra day we have in 2008, February 29- more on that later….

Art Clinic – January 2008

Every Thursday is art day, a “therapy session” from 10 to 6. Come on down to our basement studio and get messy with a project, see what other artists are up to if just say “hello”. We offer a space to work some materials if you need them and lots of spicy conversation. This is a great time to work on ATC’s (artist trading cards) or other projects.

January 10, 2008 Doll Body Parts are due for anyone taking part in the challenge

Due to the demand we are offering two Children’s Art Class:

Art making adventures for Younger People (adults are welcome too)
This class is designed for young artists but can be inspiring for adults as well. We will work in various wet and dry mediums and explore the world of art making. Dress appropriately.

Tuesday January 8, 15, 22 and 29. 3:00 – 5:00 PM

Art Therapy Journals- Make a date with yourself and dig deep making private visual journals. This class is designed to get you to explore yourself through collage, paint and the written word. The focus of this class is to get down and dirty letting your inner truth and intuition guide you to making provocative, soul searching art for yourself.
Wednesday January 9, 16, 23, and 30, 6:00- 8:00 PM This class is open on a weekly basis so you can join at anytime but please call ahead so I can have the journal paper ready for you to put together.)

Metal Clay

Fee $110 includes 1 oz of Fine Silver Clay and everything needed to create beautiful charms and pendants.

Metal Clay is 99.9% Pure Fine Silver which has been finely ground and mixed with an organic binder which produces a clay-like material. When fired, the binder burns away and the silver solidifies. This clay can be sculpted, carved, stamped, cast, virtually manipulated anyway that you can work traditional clay. If you have a desire to create beautiful pieces in silver without the need for a silversmith’s tools or experience. Beads and findings will be available for you to complete a necklace, bracelet or earrings at an additional cost. Open Studio available for individuals who have attended my introductory class for Metal Clay. The studio cost is $25.00 plus the cost of the silver clay.

Make loving Valentine’s Day cards or an accordion piece of art for your home, to celebrate Valentine’s Day. You will learn a few techniques and get some fun supplies. Just bring scissors. Here is an example of an according book you could make in our "Valentine's Day Card" Workshop.

Here are a few examples of cards you can make during the Art Clinic's Valentine Card/Book workshop. The one above uses embossed metal, stencils and hand made carved stamps. This card uses gesso, paint,collage,and handcarved stamps.

Fabulous Felted Silk Scarves

At the Art Clinic Thursday is ART DAY and sometimes one of our arty friends wants to use us a guinea pigs to test out a technique. This past Thursday we got to make felted silk scarves. What a fantastic experience!!! I love the tactile aspect of working with wool to felt (not to mention the gorgeous new addition to my scarf collection!!!)

These woman got quite an arm work out rolling the fabric to get the wool to connect with the silk.
That's our fearless leader Barbara Carr in front, Syd and Mary Stanley are in the back.
I think we need to offer this as a class or something to do with felting because it is so much fun!!!!

Art Class for Children and Moms

Here are some pictures of the work done in the Art Clinic's Childrens Art with Mom. this is a unique class as we have a diverse age group working together. We started with a lesson on Contour drawing using Cave Art as our inspiration. Everyone enjoyed themselves and, as you can see, made some great art.

Okay folks it is time to make presents for all the gift giving holidays that are swiftly approaching. The Art Clinic offers two jewelry classes which are a great way to make truly unique gifts as well as having some creative fun, Mixed Media Jewelry on Dec. 1 and Metal Clay on Dec. 8th. Former students were able to make a bunch of charms from metal clay and turn them into pendants for necklaces, earrings or for bracelets (one woman made a bracelet but I think she kept it for herself). (Scroll down a bit to check out some pictures of work)
Also, if you are feeling stressed out you may want to join our Visual Journaling class. We are having a blast on Wed. nights. 5:30-7:30

Art Clinic
September is not the New Year but in my mind it is always a beginning-maybe because it is my birthday month or maybe because school traditionally started in this month. Whatever my memories, this September is the beginning of new things here at the Art Clinic.
Yes, we have grown a bit- we have added a new area to our wonderful studio space, the jewelry studio and to celebrate we will be conducting new classes. Please read on, and if you have any suggestions of times for classes and the kinds of classes you would like offered, please email us. We would love to hear your ideas.

Art Clinic – September 2007

TheFUN FUN FUN is back!

One Thursday in September, (date to be determined) Come join fiber artists: Mary Stanley and Colleen Darling, in a combined class of needle felting and felt bead making. In this class you will learn to needle felt by making items such as a book cover or fun pin. You will also learn to make felted beads and embellish them with seed beads and needle felted embellishments. There may be a small materials fee. Class cost $45. includes a snack.

Wednesday September 5, 12, 19 and 26th

Mixed Media Jewelry
This class will cover a variety of ways to create mixed media jewelry using cold connections. This is a great way to do something really unique with all the little stuff you have been saving. Fee: $75 (includes some supplies)

Here are some jewelry pieces made by past students. Santa Barbara artist Lynn Fogel made a pendant and beads in the May class and Joan Redon of Santa Ynez made the bee and buddha pendents. Neither of these women had worked with metal clay before. Aren't these fantastic!!!

Today we handed in our challenge and here are the results. I think this is very cool and I want to do another one. A month...or so...ago we all took a small piece of paper that had been cut up into 6 equal parts of an unknown painting...well one person knew what the finished painting was. The challenge was to reproduce your square into a 12 x 14 piece out of any medium and bring it in to the ART CLINIC on a certain day....and here are the results. I always find this amazing. You have no idea what the finnished piece will look at or how yor piece fits in so you have to just deal with the shapes, patterns and colors you see. Try it sometime. An even easier way to force yourself to see shapes etc. is to draw something that is upside down...try that and you will see what I mean....

Come and help us celebrate our Guild’s 20th Anniversary!

The Guild is having an art show and sale at the Grange Hall in Los Olivos
Saturday, June 23rd from 1-5PM
2374 Alamo Pintado Avenue, Los Olivos
The Grange Hall is located next to the park at the center of Los Olivos, across the street from Patrick’s Side Street Café.

Various members of the Guild will have select pieces of their work on display and available for purchase. Original paintings and prints will be available by Guild artists

The event is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. Meet local artists, see a beautiful variety of artwork, and enjoy free refreshments. There will be a Silent Auction with items from local merchants.

The Guild is a Non Profit organization that presents scholarships to graduating high school students to pursue education in art. It supports and encourages area artists in education and exhibit opportunities as well as offering special programs and events that are free and open to the public. Promoting artistic awareness in the community is part of the group’s mission.

Another art filled month

May has had lots of art going on. Carol and Syd just finished a community workshop a groundbreaking ceremony for the Lompoc Theater. It was a very fun day.

Sat we had guest artist, Barbara Carr, teach student the basics of felting. This was a great class that we want to repeat. Let us know if you are interested.

We are also in an art show at the Solvang Bakery along with some of our students. Go check it out.

Carol curated the show for the guild which included all the high school students in the valley. It looked really good and 2 pieces of art have been sold. Saturday, May 26, 9-4 Felting basic will be taught by Guest artist, Barbara Carr. In this workshop you will learn the basics of felting by making a piece of flat felt, using colorful merino wool fiber, water and soap. You will be able to embellish your flat piece using silk and "prefelts". No knitting required (or allowed).
All supplies provided with a break for lunch $60.

Sunday May 27, 1 to 5 You can join Carol and Syd at their workshop for the ground breaking ceremony of the Lompoc Theater. It is the theater's 80th birthday also.

Carol and I have been kinda busy lately. We have been traveling and getting ready for the Arts Prima Vera art show in Los Olivos on April 21 and 22 in the grange. There are 20 artists at this point...all very talented. If you are in the area come by. This is the Vintner's Festival weekend so there will be lots to see and sip.

Our upcoming classes are talked about in our archives and we will have more photos of examples soon. Tomorrow is Carol's metal clay class that she actually has openings in still if you are catching this post tonight, give her a call. April 30 Syd will be teaching a basic acrylic class and we are trying to start a painting day that will be like our Thurs. art day but just painting. We are thinking of Tues mornings. If you have any interest or input let us know. I think May 1 would be the first gathering.

I also want to share my star student, Penny's collage cottages. ....and she is working on more! If anyone is interested in this class let us know. We will be working on our new schedule soon....which reminds me I forgot to mention that we have a special Sun. altered book class on May 20th. There is still room so come by or call to get signed up. If you have taken this class before and just want to work on yours and see what eveyone else is doing, come by and sit in the class and use our materials for $25.

Saturday, April 28, 9 - 12 Carol will be teaching wire wrap jewelry. Cost $45.
From 1- 4 Syd will teach shrinky slinky bracelet making. Cost $45.
Monday, April 30, 4:30 - 6 Syd will be teaching the basics of acrylic painting for 4 weeks. Cost $60. for 4 classes.

Metal Clay Workshop

These are the pieces that were made by some of the workshop members of the last Metal Clay class on March 10, 2007. I apologize for the poor photos. the Silver needs the correct lighting ect... But, you can still get an idea of what you could do in one workshop. We always have a lot of fun and people go home with some great silver pieces to wear or stuff in their walls for safe keeping. Joan made a magnolia blossom for her mother's 90th b-day as well as earrings and a pocket salamander for herself.
Barbara made a box ( the one with the heart) and a few charms.
Anne made a bunch of beads and charms, as did Penny(below)

Not bad for a days work!!! Next class is coming up April 14, 2007 so sign up soon as Carol needs to order clay.

Basic Drawing Class

These two images are of drawings by students who took the basic drawing class with Carol. They were both motivated to do their homework, so progressed swiftly. This was a project in which they made a still life from items they chose. They then created these "Trompe l'oiel" (which means "fool the eye")drawings. Not bad for four lessons. This one is incomplete, but looks interesting in it's incompleteness.
